NOTE: This special notice is intended to explain legislation and provide specific information. Every effort has been made to ensure the contents are accurate. As part of Budget 2015, Alberta will increase its tobacco tax rates effective 12:01 a.m. on October 28, 2015. The new rates will be as follows:

Cigarettes and Tobacco Sticks

  • Cigarettes: $0.25 each
  • Tobacco sticks: $0.25 each

Other Tobacco

  • Fine cut tobacco: $0.375 per gram or any portion of a gram
  • Pipe tobacco: $0.375 per gram or any portion of a gram
  • Chewing tobacco and snuff: $0.375 per gram or any portion of a gram


  • 129% of the taxable price of the cigar
  • Minimum tax: $0.25 per cigar
  • Maximum tax: $7.83 per cigar
